Video backgrounds in Discord, on your Mac

Updated October 2026 · checked against Discord's own documentation

Short answer

Discord has video backgrounds, but custom ones need Nitro. Everyone gets blur and a few Discord presets; Nitro and Nitro Basic members can upload JPG, PNG, GIF or MP4 files up to 10 MB, in the desktop app only. With Backdrop Cam as your camera, any video of any length works, no subscription.

How to use a video background in Discord

  1. Pick your video in Backdrop Cam

Click the Backdrop Cam icon in the menu bar, then the background thumbnail. Add a clip with +, from Photos, or by dragging a video file in. Click a tile to use it.

  2. Choose Backdrop Cam in Discord

Open User Settings (the gear) → Voice & Video → Camera → Backdrop Cam.

  3. Set Discord's video background to None

In the same Video Background section, choose None.

Discord's limits, and how Backdrop Cam avoids them

Discord's custom backgrounds are a Nitro perk with a 10 MB cap and a limit of 10 uploads, and they work only in the desktop client. Backdrop Cam has none of those limits: your clip can be any length, and because Discord just sees a camera it also works in Discord in the browser.

Streamers

Backdrop Cam works as a source in OBS too, so the same background follows you from a Discord call to a stream. See the OBS guide.

Questions

Can you have an animated background on Discord without Nitro?

Discord's own custom uploads need Nitro or Nitro Basic. With Backdrop Cam as your camera, any video works without a subscription.

Why isn't my Discord video background working?

Discord's backgrounds are desktop-only, and custom files must be JPG, PNG, GIF or MP4 under 10 MB. If you use Backdrop Cam, set Discord's video background to None and choose Backdrop Cam.

What size should a Discord video background be?

With Discord's own feature, keep files under 10 MB. Backdrop Cam has no file-size limit and sends 1280×720 video at 30 fps.
