Video backgrounds in Webex, on your Mac
Updated October 2026 · checked against Webex's own documentation
Short answer
Yes, the Webex App can use a video background: you can add up to 10 of your own images or videos (.mov or .mp4 among them), up to 1920×1080. Backdrop Cam is for using the same moving background across Webex and every other app, with a finer cut-out.

How to use a video background in Webex
Pick your video in Backdrop Cam
Click the Backdrop Cam icon in the menu bar, then the background thumbnail. Add a clip with +, from Photos, or by dragging a video file in. Click a tile to use it.
Choose Backdrop Cam in Webex
In Webex, open Settings → Video → Camera → Backdrop Cam, or pick it from the video options in the preview window.
Set Webex's background to None
In Video options → Change virtual background, choose None.
Webex's own video backgrounds
Webex lets you personalise your background with up to 10 files of your own, including .mov and .mp4, from 480×360 to 1920×1080, on hardware that meets its requirements. Admins decide which background options you get.
Why use Backdrop Cam anyway
Backdrop Cam's background follows you to every app, uses a hair-level matting model on the Neural Engine, and switches from the menu bar. It also works when your Webex admin has limited background options, because Webex just sees a camera. Check your organisation's policy first.
